Wood Selection for Outdoor Playsets
All PAFICPLAY wood playset outdoor products are made from solid China fir (Chinese cedar), scientifically known as Cunninghamia lanceolata.
China Fir is a softwood with a beautiful natural grain, pleasant fragrance, and natural resistance to decay and insects. It is widely used for residential swing set play set products because of its strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
The logs are milled into rectangular boards and cut to the required lengths for manufacturing.
Wood Treatment for Outdoor Playsets
The cut wood boards for our wooden outdoor playset and wood playground set products are kiln dried to achieve a moisture content below 18%, helping avoid splits caused by rapid moisture loss.
The kilns are built and maintained in accordance with FSC requirements.
Before entering some countries, the wood used for wooden outdoor playset and wood playground set products must be accompanied by a kiln-drying treatment certificate for customs and quarantine clearance, proving that the wood has undergone the required pre-treatment.
Splits and Cracks in Wooden Swing Sets
Splits and cracks will occur in timber used for a play swing set and wooden swing set as it expands and contracts with humidity and temperature changes. They will occur particularly in round pole timbers, but also in square cut timber, and they are found in new sets as well as old ones.

Applying a preservative can greatly help prevent cracks and splits. Once it is applied, they can then treat all exposed areas. However, this means that the outside of the wood has a high moisture content. If this can be allowed to dry out slowly in more controlled conditions, often taking up to three months, the end result will be a greatly reduced incidence of cracking.
